The following is the research of Clayton Barker
1990 to present: Here are the
results of my own genealogical research on my own root system, or so to
speak. Hopefully distant branches of the tree can perhaps re-link to
one-another by discovering this web-page, and share info, charts and stories. However, I would really
appreciate it if you would provide acknowledgement in your work as well –

The Barker Family of Princeton-Gobles: Refer to links at the left for connections to other family charts
I am working on that are directly related to our Barker family. John Barker
Sr. was born in Binnington Yorkshire, England and immigrated to Canada via
'cattle boat' along with his brother, Thomas in 1856 or 57. A younger sister
Rachel came to Canada in 1890 with her family, the Woodalls. After arriving in Canada John and Thomas took up
residence in the "Little York" area (Toronto). Little York of
course has been swallowed up whole by the present-day city of Toronto. The
exact location of this village is the corner of Danforth and Main Street of
Toronto. The Barker's soon found themselves farming in the Erindale /
Brampton area (north-west of Toronto) where Thomas and John later were
married at St. Peter's Anglican Church, Erindale. John and
Rose Barker had three of their children; William, Sarah and John while still
living in the Toronto area but between 1863 and 1865 they moved to the
Brant-Oxford County area and rented a farm near Gobles; Lot 17, Concession I,
Burford Township. Their youngest
daughter, Esther was born while in the Gobles area. It is here
that Grandpa (Luther) tells that Great-Great-Grandpa John Barker (Bar5.6) had
to "pick peas" to pay the rent.
Up until
her death, old Hannah Barker (Hannah Ashwell) wrote letters to her children
who had gone across the 'pond' to North America, and occasionally the Beamers
(Rose’s sister’s family) and Thomas Barker's family of Erindale, got to visit
John and Rose Barker of Burford Township. However, like always, it seems like
the only times when families actually get together is for weddings and
funerals. The following is what John Barker Jr. (BAR4.3)
wrote about the funeral of his mother Rose: Those present at the funeral, May 6th 1916 were – James Packham, George Packham, Fred Packham and Esther Beamer
(siblings of Rose); Rosamond Beamer (dau of Esther), Philip Beamer (son of
Esther), Rose Palmerston (dau. of Esther), Albert Barker (son of Thomas
Barker), Kate Curran (dau. of Thomas Barker), James Woodall (son of Rachel
Woodall). They had to borrow the carriage of J. Stephenson (General Store
keeper) of Cathcart for the family to ride in. John and Rose Barker eventually bought a two
hundred-acre farm (Lot 10, Concession 2, Burford Township) in 1878. Sarah
Barker married John Brooks of Woodbury and John Barker Jr. (Bar4.3) married
Margaret Eliza Lamont of Blandford Township and Esther Rachel married Almond
P. Disher of Tansley, William remained single and owned many properties in
the Town of Paris Ont., where he lived. Click Here to go to BARKER Genealogy Page 3 |
