#115 King Street, Burford. (East Part)

#115 is two locations under one municipal street number - the East part is the larger and is now a Bed and Breakfast and Chocolate Shop owned and operated by Betty Johnston. During the course of its lengthy history, it had been many uses over the past 130 years, including a clothing shop and bakery with a Dentist office on the second floor.

During the days when moving buildings rather then demolish them was a popular thing, this building was brought here from the near-by hamlet of Mt. Vernon, in the mid-1890's. This site had been burned out and the local businessmen took to bringing in buildings from Mt. Vernon as replacements, to re-populate the street. This building had been the larger portion of what was originally a hotel located somewhere in Mt. Vernon and brought here to Burford on rollers, by the Wooden Moving Company. It was too large of a building for them to move the whole thing at once, so it was taken apart and brought to Burford in two pieces...


#115 King Street, Burford. (West Part)

Though the west part will be talked about separately, it is important to know that the site of the West part was originally a side porch and alleyway for the East part and access to the old bakery oven, where the bread was loaded onto wagons and distributed to the community. It had been said that during one Burford Fair this bakery supplied about 100 loaves of bread for the event...
